An Open Letter to Our Corporate Partners About Higher Education Today
From President Hawkins Posted on: September 13, 2016
Dear Partners and Colleagues,
With the recent closing of ITT Technical Institute coming on the heels of other for-profit institutions closing, I felt it important to provide you with a bit of context and also assure you of where Bellevue University stands.
ITT and other recently shuttered universities are for-profit enterprises that were denied the ability to extend Title IV funding (federal student loans) to their students by the U.S. Department of Education because of concerns about their "administrative capacity and financial viability."
I want to assure you that Bellevue University is not at risk for these charges. Our financial responsibility composite score, which is the U.S. Department of Education gauge of financial health, is at the highest level, and we have a very low student loan default rate and have for the past 20 years. We are accredited through the year 2025 with the Higher Learning Commission, one of the six regional accreditors under the U.S. Department of Education.
A few other key facts to remember are, as a national leader in adult learning:
- We are a non-profit university that is focused on serving working adult learners with an education that will help them achieve their career and life goals.
- Bellevue University has been honored many times for the innovative and effective work we do, including our most recent ranking in the Top Ten of Adult Learner-Serving Universities.
- We are working with ITT students to help them receive credit for work they have successfully completed there. That means any tuition assistance you may have invested in students attending ITT will not be wasted if they choose to transfer their credits to Bellevue University.
There is a lot of change going on in higher education today, and it can be confusing. Be assured that partnering with a university that is focused on your employees/students is still one of the most effective ways to serve your corporate learning needs and your employees' lifelong learning goals.
Of course, I believe Bellevue University is one of the best partners you can choose. We have been leading the way in addressing your goals and your employees' goals through career-advancing education for years, and our commitment is to continue to support you in your workforce development needs with these programs.
Thank you for your confidence in us.
Mary B. Hawkins, Ph.D.
President, Bellevue University
